Regardless of the season, the Pig Trail Scenic Byway makes for a beautiful drive by car or ride by motorcycle. You can expect a thrilling trip past lakes and creeks; tree tunnels during spring, summer and fall; and historic buildings and towns. In the spring, you’ll see colorful wildflowers, and in the fall, your vista is unparalleled brilliant autumn foliage.
The geology of the Ozarks produces stunning miles of scenery and exciting serpentine highways that almost continually twist and turn, allowing travelers to experience the rugged terrain up close and personal. There are many 15-mph hairpins, switchbacks, curves, and hills. It takes more than a little bravery to ride this particular section of the deeply wooded Ozark Mountains, but it’s worth it.
The Pig Trail is 19 miles of pure fun. It begins at Arkansas 23 on the South boundary of the Ozark National Forest and goes to its intersection with Arkansas 16 at Brashears. It is said to be a motorcycle rider’s paradise, and attractions along the route include a float trip on the Mulberry River, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fishing.
Stop at the Turner Bend Store for your patch designating you as a Pig Trail survivor, and rest at one of the Turner Bend campsites or cabins. Turner Bend Outfitters can fix you up with campsite rentals, any gear you’ll need, and boat rentals. They also sell t-shirts, homemade sandwiches, groceries, picnic and automotive supplies, tobacco products, and a good selection of beer. If you prefer wine, they carry wines native to the area. Best of all, they are open seven days a week.
